Web-enabled Smart Service Business Infrastructures

Smart service businesses denote a specific type of economic coordination amongst independently operating component service producers coupled through an electronic network to jointly generate complex compound services, making use of emerging web service technologies. The paper gives an overview of the inner structure of smart service businesses and their fundamental components, and illustrates the concept by a couple of typical examples. Major emphasis is devoted to technical issues of information exchange and process coordination by means of web services, including their specification and control of execution. Although briefly touched, the paper does not discuss the economic rationale of the sketched class of business models.
